The third day of our holiday, Philippe wanted to go cycling, up the Col de Turini. It's a wonderful col, the first part of it lies in the most beautiful valley with amazing views over the surrounding mountains, but two years ago the col and I weren't the best friends, so I decided to let Philippe conquer it alone ;o)

Philippe started his tour in Sospel, and I decided to walk around the village. It's located next to a river, only a small stream now, but much wilder in winter I can imagine, surrounded by green mountains. The Medieval bridge connects both parts of the village.

I brought some patchwork, in case I would have to wait a little. While I was making some stitches in the shadow of a tree, a man joined me. He was watching his grandchildren. He had 14 grandchildren, he told me, but he didn't watch them all at once, that was a bit too much. He used to make socks as a profession and he proudly lifted his leg a little to show me :o)

That night, we had dinner in La Turbie. We have been there some times before and as always, we walked around the village before we found ourselves a table on the terrace.

In La Turbie live more cats than peple I think and every single one of the kitties gets a cuddle from Philippe. There are so many that we can probably turn our little walk into a daytrip ;o)

and concluded our night with a walk to the edge of the village, from where one has the most amazing view over Monaco (you can see the brightly illuminated Casino and Café de Paris at the left and the royal palace at the right) and the coastline towards Italy.

The small, Medieval town of Eze, that lies high above the Mediterranean Sea is - with its narrow streets that lead you to the castle and its wonderful view over Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat - according to my opinion, one of the most beautiful places at the Côte d'Azur.

No surprise Eze was, just like last year, the place to spend the first part of our holiday. After a 13h trip (which was well spend making some flying geese for my Carousel quilt) we arrived at the Eze Hermitage hotel where we would stay the first week.

The hotel is located on the Col d'Eze, from where one has a wonderful view over both the sea and the valley on the other side. Next to the hotel is the famous Grande Corniche road, a winding road on the mountains high above the sea with the most amazing panorama's, as well as a natural reserve.

Because of the draught, a forest fire broke out, just a couple of hundreds of meters from our hotel. Luckily fire departments from the surrounding regions arrived quickly and with 8 Canadairs and 100 fireman, they could control the fire that same evening and limit the damage to 4 ha.

Unlike when I'm on 'quilt tour' and I always forget to take photo's, my camera and I are inseperable when I'm on a holiday, so please prepare yourself for MANY pictures!

Of course we visited Eze itself. It's a small town and we've seen it many times before, but it's very inviting to take another look and discover new things.

The second day, Philippe went cycling and I visited Nice. I love the narrow streets and the bright colored houses! I don't like to drive in the mountains, so I took the bus, which stopped right in front of our hotel and dropped me off in the centre of the city. I visited the old town, the boulevards with parks and fountains, the beach and the market at the Cours Saleya.
